To enhance the skills, knowledge, and behaviour of new drivers, the Road Safety Authority (RSA) introduced Essential Driver Training (EDT). This training was implemented as a precautionary measure to address the high incidence of road accidents involving young and inexperienced drivers. As a result, EDT has become mandatory for all new drivers.
If your first B category (Car) learner permit was issued on or after April 4, 2011, completing all EDT lessons is a requirement before taking your full driving test.
Learner drivers who complete EDT have a significantly higher chance of passing the driving test. The structured training allows them to improve their driving knowledge and skills, making the test much easier. Therefore, even if you are not required to complete full EDT program, it is highly beneficial to undertake the training.
